RECOGNIZING the potential of open source software (OSS) to improve the information and communication technology (ICT) industry, an official of a foundation said OSS can be a “better alternative” to enable the country to become a significant player in the $450-billion global ICT market.

New Marawi facility to produce biofuel from malunggay seeds

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Agriculture-Biotechnology Program Office (DA-BPO) has established a Marawi City facility that will produce biofuel from malunggay seeds.
Besides providing employment to Maranaos, an ethnic group, the first Moringa Oil Manufacturing Plant in the city is also expected to expand trade opportunities for malunggay growers. The facility intends to process oil from malunggay seeds, producing a viable source of biodiesel for export to the United States.

Pinoy doc develops herbal shampoo out of 'lauat'

A Filipino neurosurgeon has developed an herbal shampoo that can prevent baldness.
Dr. Rainier Villanueva, a native of Masbate province, has developed “Lauat,” an herbal shampoo that has the unique property of preventing falling hair.
Villanueva has established Rainier’s Research and Development Institute (RRDI), the first Filipino herbal company in the United States.

Gov’t nutritionists develop squash flour for making pan de sal

Government nutritionists have developed flour from squash that they said is fortified with Vitamin A and can be used to bring down the cost of baking pan de sal, an official of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) said yesterday.
At a press conference in Quezon City yesterday, FNRI director Dr. Mario Capanzana said pan de sal using Vitamin A-fortified flour can help reduce malnutrition and cushion the increase in prices of pan de sal, one of the 30 "most frequent food items" in the country.
