Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno
Paeng Nepomuceno is a six-time world champion. He is FIQ’s International Bowler of the Millennium in behalf of 100 million bowlers. He is also considered to be the greatest bowler in the sport’s history. The Guinness Book of World Records, with its 1994 edition, listed Paeng as having won the most number of World Cups. Paeng won 4 World Cups which were achieved in each of three different decades and are listed below: 1. Tehran, Iran - November 19, 1976 2. Jakarta, Indonesia - November 1, 1980 3. Le Mans, France - November 8, 1992 4. Belfast, Northern Ireland - November 23, 1996
The Guinness Book of World Records in its 2003 edition listed a second world record. It recognized that Paeng was the youngest ever to win a world title at the age of 19.
Paeng Nepomuceno also won the International Tournament championship in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 8, 1984 and the World Tenpin Masters championship in London, England on March 7, 1999. On October 4, 2002, Paeng won a gold medal together with RJ Bautista in bowling's double event for men at the Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea. In total, Paeng has won over 100 tournament titles.
He is the only bowler who had received the prestigious International Olympic Committee President's Trophy and was the first enshrined in the International Bowling Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri in 1993.
Paeng is a national legend, and is one of the Philippine's greatest sports heroes. He was the first Filipino to win a competition without using weight divisions or age groupings. He was the first athlete to be enshrined in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame after naming him five times as Athlete of the Year. He was subsequently named as Filipino Athlete of the Century in 1999 which confirmed President Marcos' naming him earlier in 1984 as the "Greatest Filipino Athlete of the Century".
Rafael Nepomuceno was born on January 30, 1957 in Manila. He is a lefty and a 6'2" Filipino.
