Hilario Gelbolingo Davide Jr. is currently the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations. A native of Colawin, in Argao, Cebu, he was born on December 20,1935 to Hilario P. Davide, Sr., a retired Schools Division Superintendent, and Josefa L. Gelbolingo, a former public school teacher. He graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1955 with an Associate in Arts degree and eventually entered the U.P. College of Law as an entrance scholar.

He started his career in 1959 as a private secretary to the Vice Governor of Cebu and served in the faculty of the College of Law of Southwestern University in Cebu City from 1962-1968.

 

Career Highlights:

1971 Delegate elect of the 4th District of Cebu to the Constitutional Convention (ConCon)

1978 First Minority Floor Leader of the Interim Batasang Pambansa (Interim National Legislature)
He had the most number of bills and resolutions filed to lift martial law to his credit.

1986 Appointed one of the commissioners for the Constitutional Convention by then Pres. Corazon Aquino.

1988 Appointed as the Chairman of the Commissions on Elections (COMELEC) by Pres. Corazon Aquino

1989 Davide chaired the Presidential Fact Finding committee investigating the coup attempt of December 1989 to oust Pres. Corazon Aquino and the involvement of military personnel, civilians and private individuals.

1991 He was appointed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on January 24

1996-1997 He served as the Working Chairman of the Court's Third Division

1997-1998 Chairman of the House of Representative Electoral Tribunal overseeing protest filed by congressional candidates.

1998 Davide was appointed by Pres. Joseph Estrada as the 20th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

2000 He served as the presiding officer of Estrada's impeachment trial and following the ouster of Estrada, Davide administered the oath of office to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the EDSA shrine.

2000 Philippine Daily Inquirer named him Filipino of the year.

2003 Davide receieved the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service.

2005 He retired as Chief Magistrate on Dec. 20 after reaching the mandatory age of 70.

2006 Pres. Arroyo appointed Davide as presidential adviser on electoral reforms in the hope of reforming the country's elec system.
