![]() Josie Natori - Born Josefina Almeda Cruz and eldest of a brood of six. She was raised in a very creative environment surrounded by strong empowered women. At age nine, she was already a celebrated classical pianist, and she performed a solo concert with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite her success in music, she knew early on that business is her real calling. She left Manila for New York in 1964, to study economics at Manhattanville College. Given her exceptional drive, she became an investment banker at Merryll Lynch in 1971 and eventually became the first woman vice- president in investment banking. She got married to a third-generation, Japanese American Ken Natori and had a son Kenneth Jr. In 1976 after the birth of her son, she was ready to pursue more creative endeavors. She wanted to embark on projects that would capitalize on her Filipino roots. Her business started when she showed some hand embroidered blouses to a buyer at Bloomingdale's who suggested to make the blouses longer and turn them into nightshirts. Josie Natori was so sold to the idea that she quit her job and eventually built an empire. Today Natori is a brand name synonymous to luxury and style. It is one of the powerful forces in the Philippine lingerie industry and is fast becoming a global brand. Josie Natori is the first Filipino designer to conquer the global fashion market. She is indeed the epitome of the new and empowered Filipina. References: http://www.natori.com/HTML/CProfile1.htm Inquirer.net
