John Gokongwei is a Filipino businessman , founder and chairman emeritus of JG Summit Holdings with holdings in telecom, financial services, petrochemicals, power, aviation and hog farming. He was named in the Forbes Magazine February 2008 edition as one of the 48 Asian Altruists. He was cited was cited for his August 2006 decision to give half of his shares in his holding company, worth US$200 billion then, to Gokongwei Brothers FoundatinoN (GBF). It is the Philippines "largest-ever" donation for an altruistic cause, Forbes Asia said. The GBF funded the first group of 34 Filipino postgraduates studying language and culture in Beijing.
