A euphoric show like no other
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo, philstar.com
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Several issues ago, Funfare reported that Flamingo (in Las Vegas) “pulled the plug” on the SOS (Society of Seven) which had been performing there for years, with Lani Misalucha joining them around three years ago. On the group’s farewell show a few weeks ago, they had Martin Nievera as special guest.
What actually happened was that the producer’s contract with Flamingo had expired, so it wasn’t right to describe the incident as “pulling the plug,” etc. Taking over the group’s slot are Donnie and Marie Osmond. More A euphoric show like no other (Photo: philstar.com) |

Charice’s ‘baptism of fire’
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
The Showbiz Wheel of Fortune turns in strange but otherwise predictable ways. You know how it goes: When a starry-eyed hopeful is just struggling in the jungle world of showbiz, nobody bothers with him. But when he starts to make a name, everybody gravitates toward him. All of a sudden, he finds himself swamped with kith and kin extending to the sixth degree.
Case in point: Charice (minus Pempengco because her absentee father had stopped her from using that surname). More Charice’s ‘baptism of fire’ (Photo:philstar.com) |

The much-awaited 61st Cannes Film Festival opens May 14 with the Philippine entry in competition, Brillante Mendoza's Serbis, screening on May 18. Yet, plane tickets, lodgings, and travel documents were still being confirmed for most until three days ago. When we left Manila a week ago, Serbis was still in post-production, having been accepted on the basis of a rough edit without any sound. It seems that the film is finally finished and on its way. MANILA, Philippines—“Earth’s whisper.” The English translation of “Hunghong sa Yuta” — the title of Arnel Mardoquio's film about war and peace in Mindanao — easily cues us on how to read this story about a clutch of deaf-mute children in a mountain community consisting of Christians, Muslims and Lumads, and the teacher from the city who introduces them to the alphabet and numbers.
