Bush honors Filipino doctor at White House

MANILA, Philippines - President George Bush invited six Physicians for Peace volunteers, including a Filipino medical volunteer, to the White House last April 29 to participate in a ceremony to mark the kick-off of National Volunteer Week.
Retired USAF Brig. Gen. Ron Schuyers, CEO of the group, e-mailed from Norfolk, Virginia. He is also a volunteer. The goal is to build peace and international friendships through the medical profession.

Filipina recognized for efforts vs human trafficking

MANILA, Philippines -- For her efforts to battle human trafficking, the head of a Filipino non-government organization became the first Asian to be recognized as a “social entrepreneurs” and awarded a three-year, $1-million grant by a US-based foundation.

VIGAN CITY -- City officials and employees of this "world heritage city" honored Don Isabelo de los Reyes, the father of the Philippine labor union movement, during the observance of Labor Day yesterday.
The rites coincided with the opening of this year’s six-day Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts which is celebrated every first week of May.
Vigan City Mayor Eva Marie Singson Medina led local officials in the floral offering at the historical marker honoring Don Belong. American priest in Illinois supports GK

ILLINOIS – A fleeting visit to the Philippines and a side trip to a Gawad Kalinga (GK) site located in an impoverished Visayan province led an American priest here to fall in love – with Filipinos living in poverty and consequently extend his hand to alleviate their plight.
Fr. Ernie Norvac, resident parish priest of St. Mary’s Augustine parish here, had never heard of GK until Couples for Christ Chicago Regional Director Jun Billote introduced him to the movement.
