THE DEPARTMENT of Tourism has called on local governments, investors and the public to help meet the country’s goal to bring in five million visitors in 2010 by participating in an online survey that seeks to name the “New Seven Wonders of Nature.”

Chinese tourists to visit the Philippines in large numbers

The Philippines recently participated in the China Outbound Travel and Tourism Market (COTTM) in Beijing. Over the past three years the COTTM has been the 100% business-to-business event dedicated to outbound travel and tourism in China.

As more countries are seeking opportunities to attract Chinese tourists, COTTM provided a focused platform for international travel and professionals to set up business with the Chinese outbound tour operators. This year’s COTTM hosted more than 250 companies from 60 countries (including the Philippines) who gathered at the China World Trade Center to do business with Chinese outbound tour operators, travel agencies, corporate buyers, and business travel agencies. The three-day event also had more than 400 hosted buyers and 2,000 travel trade professionals who used the COTTM to source new products and destinations. More Philippine Bound!

Last week, I had the good fortune of spending the weekend in Palawan in the company of colleagues in the automotive industry and motoring journalists as well. It was Toyota Motor Philippines Corpo.’s (TMPC) annual out-of-town sortie, primarily to allow the journalists to test drive their newest models available in the market, then to give them plenty of time for rest and recreation afterwards in some of the best tourist sites in the islands. BORACAY ISLAND -- The very moment we stepped out of the arrival area of the Caticlan Airport, where we were flown in by Cebu Pacific's newly-acquired ATR-500 aircraft from Manila, a smiling young man, holding a digicam, met us, introduced himself and started taking pictures of us while his companion took and carried our bags, as they guided us to a waiting van.

It was "photo ops" (as we called it) here and there until we reached a private docking area at a nearby shore where a motorized banca was waiting to bring us to our destination -- The Boracay Tropics Resort Hotel, located at Station 2 in Bo.
